What students say:
The typical undergrad here is "genuine," "easygoing," "always busy," "well-dressed," and has a "sunny disposition despite the gray skies." Beyond those qualities, the population is "a wide mix of hipsters, jocks, theater kids, music students," and "crunchy granola hippies." Cliques are often based loosely on academics, but it's worth noting that "people of all kinds fit in here" and "everyone finds their niche," thanks in part to the way that "each school (music, communications, business, etc.) is its own community." Ethnic diversity and other kinds of diversity are "not entirely unheard of." However, people are "usually from the Northeast," and "the population of students that fit into the typical suburban, upper-middle-class family is definitely significant." Politically, "students at Ithaca tend to be liberal." Some students tell us that you'll find "a lot of people are environmentally and socially conscious" here who want "to change the world."

What students say
Small class sizes that afford plenty of "personal attention," "outstanding" scholarships, and cross-registration with nearby Cornell University are a few great reasons to choose Ithaca College, a smallish school in central New York that offers many of the resources you would expect to find at a much larger university. "You are able to be a part of a community and get the chance to pursue interests that are not necessarily a part of your chosen course of study," relates an English major. "We have loads of opportunities to do and try a wide variety of things." The vast multitude of academic offerings includes "one of the best communication schools in the country." Also notable are "strong" majors in music, business, and drama; a "highly competitive" six-year doctorate program in physical therapy; and the cinema and photography program. Professors are "really engaging and understand how to present the material so that it is relevant and meaningful." On the whole, faculty members are "really passionate about their fields and have a genuine interest in getting students excited about their passions." Challenge Yourself
With more than 100 programs across five schools, you can focus deeply in one field or combine areas to create a custom learning path. Expert faculty guide you to explore, challenge yourself, and use your knowledge for good.
Theory. Practice. Performance.
IC was founded as a music conservatory, where students learned through continuous cycles of theory, practice, and performance. That approach is still our key to success: learn important concepts, get authentic work experience, and perform at a professional level before graduation.
Location
Welcome to Ithaca, New York—ranked the #1 college town in the United States.
In the heart of New York State's beautiful Finger Lakes region, about midway between Manhattan and Toronto, this thriving, culturally diverse city of 30,000 combines small-town warmth and charm with the energy of an eclectic metropolis. In the Ithaca community, you'll never run out of new things to do, people to meet, and places to explore.
Home to Ithaca College and Cornell University, our city attracts visitors, students, and scholars from around the globe. Feed your curiosity and add to your understanding of the world at public lectures and educational events at the colleges and within the broader Ithaca community.
Campus Facilities & Equipment
Visitors to our Office of Admission and other offices in the Peggy Ryan Willams Center (PRWC) are treated to stunning views of Cayuga Lake. It is the second campus facility designed to achieve platinum LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) certification. PRWC houses our Office of Admission, as well as the Offices of the President, the Provost, the Registrar, Student Financial Services, and Human Resources. It is also home of the Division of Enrollment and other administrative offices. This state-of-the-art facility received LEED Platinum certification in late 2010, joining Yale University as one of only two academic institutions in the world to have two such buildings on campus. Over 50 percent of the energy in the building comes from renewable sources, with a geothermal system using the Earth's relatively consistent temperature to provide heating and cooling, among many other sustainable features.
The Park Center for Business and Sustainable Enterprise features collaborative workspaces and conference rooms that mimic the professional environments in which students will soon work. The building also houses our state-of-the-art trading room. The Park Center reflects a major commitment to sustainability. From top to bottom, it is a real-world example of environmental stewardship that incorporates the highest principles of sustainable design. In fact, the Park Center was one of the first 100 buildings in the world to receive platinum LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) certification, the highest level granted by the U.S. Green Building Council. But that's just the beginning. Ithaca is one of the few undergraduate institutions in the world where the ticker runs on Wall Street time, and the Center for Trading and Analysis of Financial Instruments is where the action is.
Since opening in the fall of 2011, the $65.5 million Athletics and Events Center has given Ithaca College's student-athletes a state-of-the-art facility in which to train and compete, while offering the entire campus a place to gather for significant college and community events. Honored with an Innovative Architecture & Design Award from Recreation Management magazine, the A&E Center in its first year hosted the Bomber Wrestling Invitational, Empire 8 Indoor Track & Field Championships, and Empire 8 Men's Tennis Championships, among other athletic contests, providing a valuable "home field" advantage to Ithaca teams. It was designed to meet at least LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) silver standards, and the signature tower is more than just an architectural feature—it functions to provide natural cooling and ventilation to the large indoor space.
Off-Campus Opportunities
Stay active by diving into Cayuga Lake water sports, hiking up rolling hills and down into glacier-carved gorges, and exploring woodlands. In the winter season, cozy up in a local ski lodge after hitting the hills or trails. Try local flavors at hundreds of restaurants, follow wine and beer trails along the shores of the Finger Lakes (or locally made sodas and ciders if you're under 21), and find fresh ingredients to refine your own culinary talents at our famed farmers market. Grow your artistic soul at galleries, museums, theatres, independent cinema, and underground music scenes.
Join members of the community in service by participating in local volunteer events and groups. Enjoy downtown festivals in every season—Apple Harvest Festival, Cayuga Sound Music Festival, Winter Festival, and so many more. Support local businesses and find one-of-a-kind items as you stroll and shop along the downtown Ithaca Commons throughout the year.
Whatever your interests, Ithaca has something for you.
What students say:
The number of extracurricular choices is "considerable" at Ithaca College. At the same time, "the school is small enough for anyone to get involved." There are "speakers and events offered on campus." There's also a nearly professional-quality college radio station. Many students "are part of an athletic team or participate in intramural athletics." For relaxation, students often "hang out on the quad," throwing Frisbees or "playing music on the lawns on tie-dye sheets." The social situation at Ithaca is "nothing like the party scene you'd find at a larger university," but "there are some good parties" now and then. While the campus is a little "isolated," students also frequently manage to attend frat parties at Cornell and generally "enjoy the social scene" the nearby Ivy offers. "The town of Ithaca is quaint but lively." There's "a good music scene and a lot of cool stores." When the weather is nice, "there's always some festival," or at least it seems that way. "If you're an outdoorsy person," the wooded and rocky surrounding area is a wonderland of activity. "The hiking here is unbelievable," and few other schools offer the opportunity to "go cliff jumping on a hot Saturday." On the negative side, winters are cold as a matter of course, and "the cold and rain do hinder activities." Students joke, be prepared to get your exercise walking between classes; "the hills here will kill you."

Challenge Yourself
With more than 100 programs across five schools, you can focus deeply in one field or combine areas to create a custom learning path. Expert faculty guide you to explore, challenge yourself, and use your knowledge for good.
Theory. Practice. Performance.
IC was founded as a music conservatory, where students learned through continuous cycles of theory, practice, and performance. That approach is still our key to success: learn important concepts, get authentic work experience, and perform at a professional level before graduation.

From The School
Diverse and Inclusive Community
At Ithaca, we strive to be an inclusive and welcoming community of people with diverse talents and backgrounds. A commitment to civility, mutual respect, social justice, and the free and open exchange of ideas makes us stronger.
Clubs and Activities
Find out how much more there is to experience with your peers outside the classroom, and develop skills that will help you throughout your personal and professional life after IC. Learn how to lead, immerse yourself in new cultural experiences, make a difference in the community, share your favorite forms of art and cuisine, or dive into adventure with friends.
